Week 1 - Ideation

Idea 1: The Met “In America, A Lexicon of Fashion”

The basic concept I came up with for this ad was to showcase our team’s character effects background. I wanted to pick some visually compelling styles from the “In America, A Lexicon of Fashion” exhibit that opened at The Met in September 2021 to create this sophisticated but visually creative scene. The clothes would only need to be simulated in the 3rd shot and then the second effect I thought we could have done was a flower growth on the dress in the 1st shot as the camera slides by.

Pros: Visually interesting, Different from a product ad, Important to pop culture

Cons: Lots of modeling and sculpting for the clothes so they’d match the references

Ultimately my team decided against this idea due to the time constraint of the project. I still like this idea a lot though so I may look to pursue it independently with other cfx artists.

Idea 2: Pepsi x Peep Easter Collab

My team initially liked this idea a lot due to the bright colors and it would also be very different from a black background minimalist style ad. We thought it would present some fun animation opportunities as well as be a fun color palette to work with.

Above are the different iterations of the ad story boards. The concept was for the Peeps to be having a pool party scene where they jump into the Pepsi cans and when the cooler is opened, the PepsixPeeps cans would be the on top for the final shot. The effects we would be using are the cold fog from inside the cooler, the confetti from the pool party, and fizzy bubbles for inside the soda cans.

The cooler in the first shot would be 3D integrated into a live action clean plate so we could get the top of the lid to bounce with the music. Then the final shot would have a real cooler with a person opening it, and the final product with the peeps and soda can would be composited in.

My role for the team is lighting/compositing so that’s mainly what my blog posts from here on out will be about. Below are some references for what we want out clean plates/live action scenes to look like. We are thinking about filming it ourself at one of our teammate’s apartment pool, but I’m still looking for stock ones too if that doesn’t work out for us.
